A scammer's 3 weapons: fear, greed, hurryScammer ke 3 hathiyar: darr, laalach, jaldi

Har saal naye scam aate hain, par unka dimaag wahi purana hota hai. Scammer tumhe sochne ka time nahi dena chahta. Agar tum uske 3 hathiyar pehchan lo, toh naya scam bhi turant pakad loge.

1Teen hathiyar

  • Darr: "Aapka account band ho jayega", "Aapke naam pe police case hai", "Bijli raat 9 baje kat jayegi".
  • Laalach: "Aapne lottery jeeti", "Roz ₹3,000 kamao", "30 din mein paisa double".
  • Jaldi: "Abhi karo", "Sirf 10 minute", "Kisi ko mat batana".

Jab bhi kisi message ya call mein inme se ek bhi ho, khaas kar jaldi ke saath, toh samjho khatre ki ghanti baj gayi.

2Ek niyam: Ruko → Check karo → Tab karo

1. Ruko: koi bhi link, payment, OTP ya app install turant mat karo. Asli bank ya company 10 minute ruk sakti hai.
2. Check karo, doosre raaste se: message mein diya number ya link nahi, balki official app, card ke peeche ka number, ya official website se khud contact karo.
3. Tab karo: sab theek nikle tabhi aage badho. Shak ho toh kisi bharose wale insaan se poochho.

Yaad rakho: "kisi ko mat batana" kehna khud ek bada nishaan hai. Asli adhikari tumhe parivaar se baat karne se nahi rokte.

3Ye baatein kabhi nahi hoti

  • Bank, RBI, police ya koi bhi sarkari vibhag OTP, UPI PIN, CVV ya password nahi maangta.
  • Paise receive karne ke liye kabhi PIN ya QR scan nahi chahiye.
  • Asli naukri ke liye fee nahi lagti.
  • Police ya koi agency video call pe "arrest" nahi karti aur paise transfer nahi karwaati.
  • Lottery jeetne ke liye pehle "tax" ya "processing fee" nahi bharni padti.
  1. Template ki 5 "kabhi nahi" baatein phone ke notes mein save karo.
  2. Apne phone ke pichhle 10 SMS/WhatsApp dekho: kisi mein darr, laalach ya jaldi hai?
  3. Agar koi shak wala message mila, use mat kholo. Agle lesson mein report karna seekhoge.

Example: Maan lo: bijli ka SMS

Maan lo raat 8 baje SMS aaya: "Dear customer, your electricity will be disconnected at 9:30 pm as your last bill was not updated. Call this number immediately." Isme darr (bijli kategi) aur jaldi (aaj raat) dono hain, aur number kisi aam mobile ka hai. Sahi kadam: bijli company ki official app ya bill pe likhe number se check karo. SMS wale number pe call mat karo.

Aam galtiyan

  • Jaldi ke dabaav mein bina soche link kholna ya call karna.
  • Message mein diye number ko "official" maan lena.
  • "Kisi ko mat batana" sun ke parivaar se chhupana.

Practice task

Template ke 6 messages padho aur har ek mein likho: darr, laalach ya jaldi mein se kya hai, aur sahi kadam kya hoga.

Jaldi se recap

  • Darr + laalach + jaldi = khatra
  • Ruko → doosre raaste se check → tab karo
  • OTP, PIN, CVV kisi ko nahi
  • Receive ke liye PIN nahi
  • Naukri ke liye fee nahi
  • "Kisi ko mat batana" = bada nishaan

New scams appear every year, but the thinking behind them stays the same. A scammer does not want you to have time to think. If you recognise their 3 weapons, you will catch even a new scam at once.

1The three weapons

  • Fear: "Your account will be closed", "There is a police case in your name", "Your electricity will be cut at 9 tonight".
  • Greed: "You won the lottery", "Earn ₹3,000 a day", "Double your money in 30 days".
  • Hurry: "Do it now", "Only 10 minutes", "Do not tell anyone".

Whenever a message or call has even one of these, especially together with hurry, treat it as an alarm bell.

2One rule: Stop → Check → Then act

1. Stop: do not click any link, make any payment, share any OTP or install any app straight away. A real bank or company can wait 10 minutes.
2. Check, through another route: not the number or link in the message; contact them yourself through the official app, the number on the back of your card, or the official website.
3. Then act: go ahead only if everything checks out. If in doubt, ask someone you trust.

Remember: being told "do not tell anyone" is itself a big warning sign. Real officials do not stop you from talking to your family.

3Things that never happen

  • A bank, RBI, the police or any government department never asks for an OTP, UPI PIN, CVV or password.
  • You never need a PIN or a QR scan to receive money.
  • A real job does not charge a fee.
  • The police or any agency do not "arrest" you on a video call or make you transfer money.
  • You never have to pay a "tax" or "processing fee" first to collect a lottery win.
  1. Save the template's 5 "never" facts in your phone's notes.
  2. Look at your last 10 SMS/WhatsApp messages: does any use fear, greed or hurry?
  3. If you find a suspicious message, do not open it. You will learn to report it in a later lesson.

Example: Say: the electricity SMS

Say an SMS arrives at 8 p.m.: "Dear customer, your electricity will be disconnected at 9:30 pm as your last bill was not updated. Call this number immediately." It has both fear (power cut) and hurry (tonight), and the number is an ordinary mobile number. The right step: check through the electricity company's official app or the number printed on your bill. Do not call the number in the SMS.

Common mistakes

  • Opening a link or calling under pressure to hurry, without thinking.
  • Treating the number in a message as "official".
  • Hiding things from family after hearing "do not tell anyone".

Practice task

Read the template's 6 messages and write for each one which of fear, greed or hurry it uses, and what the right step is.

Quick recap

  • Fear + greed + hurry = danger
  • Stop → check another way → then act
  • OTP, PIN, CVV to nobody
  • No PIN to receive money
  • No fee for a job
  • "Do not tell anyone" = big warning sign
